Northumberland Factoids !

What?
What the heck is a factoid? I can hear you saying. We all love factoids. those little snippets of trivia that make a place, a history, or even old fashioned gossip come alive.
Here are some you can use to amaze your friends with your knowledge of Northumberland.

Saint Cuthbert
was the inspiration behind the Lindisfarne Gospels. He spent much of his life as a hermit, and lived latterly on Inner Farne, after being Bishop of Hexham, then Bishop of Lindisfrane. His care for the eider duck earned it the local name of ‘Cuddy Duck’ in tribute to him

Kippers - A Northumberland invention!
Seahouses, in 1843 - birthplace of the kipper. John Woodger is reputed to have left herring overnight on a rack over a buring fire. On his return he thought the fish would have been ruined, but instead, he had discovered a mouth watering delicacy that has travelled the world.

Perfect Fishing Reels
It was Forster Hardy who patented a ball bearing reel in 1888 so that it ran “smooth and fast.” Fishermen could cast further with it, and the device was so successful that he founded the company which is still here in Alnwick making fishing tackle. The House of Hardy now includes a museum of fishing tackle, and is well worth a visit.
