Where to Eat

Bed & Breakfast - what about evening meals, and finding a bite of lunch?

You’ll find we’re well served for places to eat, and if you’re here for a few days, then we’re sure you’ll enjoy trying some of our local restaurants. There’s something for everyone within reach, and at all levels of price and formality.
What follows is our very own idiosyncratic list and reviews. We have tried to be factual about the establishment itself, but the opinions of the food, service, and decor are purely our own, plus what our guests have told us.

Open all day,
Sat outside under the straw umbrella last summer I had the best ever steak sandwich. The evening menu is varied, and the slow roast Northumberland lamb gained rave notices from a recent guest (April 2008).
A year on, and we’re delighted to report that the refurbishment was tasteful and kept the warmth and friendliness whilst improving the comfort. Guests report the meals are fine, and the roast beef sandwiches are still the best ever.

A cosy country pub serving good meals. You’ll feel looked after here, though it can be be busy at times.
We visited with friends, and enjoyed a good meal, entertained latterly by quiz night in the bar. It’s a popular place, though, so book ahead, and find out what the ‘special’ is - We recommend the ‘blackberry & venison’, and the beef madras.

Just a few miles away, sat at the side of the road from Rothbury.

All of our guests return saying what a good meal they had. One couple went there every evening of their stay, because there was more on the menu which they wished to try.
The menu changes regularly, so call ahead to find out what’s local, in season, and in the kitchen!
- and don’t be confused by the Tankerville Arms at Wooler - completely different place!

Newly opened at the start of 2008, “Formerly The Plough and underwent major redevelopment throughout 2007 to create this exclusive boutique hotel & restaurant experience in the heart of this Northumbrian market town”

John Blackmore is an outstanding chef, and this boutique establishment is the setting to exhibit his talent.
We like it, but it’s busy, and service can struggle to cope with its popularity

This pub has a great location. the new conservatory is almost in the sea, and the fish could nearly swim into the kitchen.
Mind you, Ian the barman may have caught them earlier in the day
The location is the best feature, with lots of fish, and a quick changing menu.
